Position Statement:
The Director of Risk Management will support UniFirst’s mission by leading a proactive, strategic approach to risk management, assessment, and mitigation. This role will be responsible for broadly leading the various insurance programs and needs including all resources that support placement, renewal, and marketing. The Director of Risk Management is expected to work collaboratively across departments to develop and execute best practices, including with Health and Safety, Legal and Human Resources. They will report to the Director of Legal Affairs and oversee the Claims Management department.

Risk Management:

  • Chairs UniFirst’s Safety and Claims Strategies Council to set and coordinate strategy around UniFirst’s risk management approach
  • Leads and manages Claim Management staff to ensure a cohesive and coordinated both pre and post loss management approach across the business
  • Establishes best practices for risk identification, loss prevention and claims management
  • Manages and works with insurance underwriters/third party administrators (TPAs) to ensure effective follow up takes places regarding incident and/or preventative measures
  • Teams with TPAs and Legal on defense and/or settlement of claims
  • Partners with UniFirst’s field and operations management to ensure adherence with established risk management protocols
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and Health and Safety to determine ways to reduce preventable injuries and associated costs
  • Orchestrates company-wide training/education relative to corporate risk management requirements and initiatives
  • Establishes risk management performance metrics and reports trends/progress of initiatives to senior management

Insurance Strategy and Procurement:

  • Serves as the principal point of contact for UniFirst with external partners including insurance brokers, insurance advisors, carriers, underwriters, loss prevention engineers/inspectors, claims adjusters, TPAs and other service providers
  • Manages the marketing and purchasing of insurance for UniFirst including working with external brokers and insurance advisors on negotiating policy renewals and inceptions
  • Explores alternative risk or optional insurance funding mechanisms
  • Develops financial methods for managing risk, including application and purchase of multiple insurance programs
  • Reviews insurance coverage for adequacy and research options and fiscal viability (cost/budget analysis) and makes recommendations for additional coverage
  • Maintains insurance policies, attaching additions and endorsements as received, and manages appropriate archiving of insurance documentation
  • Develops and maintains best practices and appropriate exceptions for indemnification, hold harmless and insurance requirements
  • Assists as needed with review of insurance requirements in a variety of contracts, leases and other agreements
  • Oversees provision and collection of Certificate of Insurance process for customers and other organizations which includes verifying information is accurate and complete, including the correct language and limits, and following up with other departments for appropriate contacts
